The present invention relates to a differential tensioning device for controlling the way in which machines for cutting strips or blocks of stone in quarries withdraw from these blocks during cutting. The machines 1 in question comprise, in each case, a powered pulley 3 on which is mounted the diamond wire 6 which has a pulling branch 7 and a pulled branch 8 and runs inside the block of stone 2, thus cutting it. The machine 1 is also capable of gradually withdrawing from the block of stone 2 as the cut proceeds, and for this purpose is provided with wheels 9 driven by a secondary motor 11. The pulling branch 7 and the pulled branch 8 are associated with members 20-21 provided with means of monitoring the forces acting on the diamond wire 6, these means being connected electrically to the secondary motor 11 to cause the machine 1 to withdraw from the block of stone 2 as a function of the sum of the forces F1 + F2 acting on the pulling branch 7 and on the pulled branch 8 of the diamond wire 6. These monitoring means can be connected to a display unit 26 located on the machine 1, from which the degree of wear of the diamond wire 6 can be deduced. IMAGE
