Procedure and apparatus for the steaming of yarn in spools or reels within containers C arriving from a group of spinning machines F and going to a group of winding machines R. The containers C are picked up, preferably automatically, from each spinning machine F and fed to the entry of a centralised processing unit V to perform the steaming, and then they are transferred, preferably also automatically, to the winding machines R. The centralised processing unit V comprises a steaming chamber V2 which can be preceded by a pre-treatment chamber V1 and/or followed by a post-treatment chamber V3, and the containers C are encoded in such a way that their movements can be performed in fully automatic fashion and with selective possibilities.
