The invention relates to a rare earth element-doped glassin which the rare earth element is homogeneously doped. Theglass is produced by a method comprising hydrolyzing a metalalkoxide of the formula:M(OR)4wherein M is a metal and R is an alkyl group in a liquidmedium, e.g. alcohols and water, in the presence of a compoundof a rare earth element and condensing the hydrolyzed materialto form a rare earth element-doped glass.
