A detector comprises a pyroelectric detector, a temperaturecontrol mechanism including a thermoelectric heating/cooling elementfor keeping the temperature of the pyroelectric detector constant,a temperature sensor, and a temperature controller responsive to thedetection signal from the temperature sensor for controlling powersupply to the thermoelectric heating/cooling element, and controlunit provided within the temperature controller for starting andshutting off the power supply to the thermoelectric heating/coolingelement only except for collecting data from the pyroelectricdetector.
