The present invention is directed to a novel product and method for regulatinghematopoietic cell function and a novel product and method for identifyingcompounds capable of regulating inflammation. The present invention includes amethod to regulate hematopoietic cell function by contacting a cell with aregulatory reagent capable of altering the activity of a molecule includingPTP1C, PTP1D, ITIM-p160 and ITIM-p70. The present invention also relatesregulatory reagents capable of regulating the activity of PTP1C, PTP1D, ITIM-p160 and ITIM-p70, including nucleic acid molecules having sequences thatencode such reagents and antibodies raised against such reagents. The presentinvention also includes a therapeutic composition comprising such reagents andtheir use to protect animals from inflammation.
