A high-speed, low computational load error correction code is disclosed comprising a first level error locating code such as a single or multiple bit null code and a second level error correction code such as a Reed-Solomon (RS) code. By using the null code to identify erasure locations, it is no longer necessary to use the second level RS code to both locate and correct the error positions. By eliminating the Euclid's algorithm circuit of conventional decoders, decoding speed is increased and complexity and cost is decreased. The transmission side of the system contains a multi-level encoder (220) comprising a null code generator (222) and a second level encoder (224). The reception side of the system contains a null code detector (261) and a second level decoder (263).
