Bacteria of the genus Escherichia, genetically altered to relieve inherent regulatory mechanisms of the tryptophan biosynthetic pathway, carrying plasmids which contain sufficient genetic information for conversion of anthranilate to tryptophan or for conversion of anthranilate to indole are useful in the fermentative production of substituted tryptophan and indole.
