An ultrasonic ranging system for measuring the fluid level in a container. The system includes a probe having an elongated body, calibration reflectors, a synchronizer (101) connected to a clock (102) and a pulser (103). The improvement comprises an analog-to-digital converter (112) operatively connected to the transducer (104) to receive and transform the electrical signals into digital electrical signals readable by a site controller (100) which is operatively connected to the synchronizer (101) to cause the synchronizer (101) to transmit the firing signal, and to the analog-to-digital converter (112) to receive the digital signals associated with the primary echo packets. The site controller (100) is configured to use the digital signals to calculate the time of flight to the fluid's surface and to calculate the fluid's volume.
