The combing head contains a supporting and driving device (1, 2) for the cotton-wool roll, a round comb (4), a pair of stripping cylinders (5, 6) and a gripper (7, 9) which is movable to and fro between a retracted position and an advanced position. When the end portion of the cotton-wool web runs off from the winding tube (19) the combing machine is brought to a stop at a moment after the pair of stripping cylinders (5, 6) has stripped a fibre tuft from the cotton wool located in the gripper (7, 9) and the fibre tuft is separated from the cotton wool. The end portion of the cotton wool and the empty winding tube (19) are then removed, and a new cotton-wool roll is attached to the supporting and driving device (1, 2). Cotton-wool web is unwound from the new cotton-wool roll until the start of the cotton-wool web has passed the clamping line of the gripper (7, 9). The combing machine is then started again.
