Method for determining the degradation of carbonaceous materials and the nitrification in biological systems

Determn. of the carbon and the ammonium breakdown in biological systems, esp. in biological waste water purificn. systems, by determn. of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the gases over the surface of the biological system. The concn. (I) of CO2 and O2 released in the gases on the surface of the biological system is measured and compared with the concn. (II) of CO2 and 2 introduced into the system. The difference between (I) and (II) is measured and the values of the NH4 and the C breakdown, proportional to the decrease in O2, are determined from the O2 consumption.
