The present invention relates to a method for producing direct initial protein 175 (IEP 175) and its derivatives of varicella-zoster virus by recombinant techniques. Structurally or functionally homologous DNA and amino acid sequences for IEP 175, and vectors for fusion proteins and eukaryotic host cells are provided. The protein and its derivatives are used as vaccines against VZV.
