A new system for determining the porosity of binding materials (13) in a triaxial cell (10) gives precise measurements at low pressures by the use of adjustable water levels. The water throughput is gauged by its rise in a hundred millilitre calibrated burette (6). Continuous raising of the water pressure (h1 to h2), such that the inner pressure is a max. of 30 millibars higher than the outer pressure, ensures that no inadmissible deviation - as found in existing methods - occurs. It is partic. suitable for determining the porosity of heavy materials at disposal sites, since it is comparatively inexpensive.
