The strengthening involves measuring the workpiece contour and the penetration depth of the deforming tool (3) in the workpiece surface (6). The initial surface condition e.g. the surface roughness, the harness and accuracy to gauge is already measured before the actual strengthening operation. A machine is used having a frame (1,2) for the reception of a fixing roller (3) and workpiece support rollers (4). In addition a frame body (2) houses a spring loaded located pneumatic test head (8). The test head is pref. arranged diametrically opposite the fixing roller (3) relative to a workpiece longitudinal axis (7).
