Appts. for capturing molten core for a reactor pressure vessel (1) following a melt down accident is claimed. Beneath the pressure vessel (1) is a primary capture chamber (11) with a channel (17) leading downwards to a secondary expansion chamber (19). Beneath the primary capture chamber (11) is a metal foundation body (9) with high heat conductivity. The foundation (11) is assembled from two or more parts and on its top side (towards the pressure vessel) has a crucible shape. The primary chamber (11) is filled with packing (13) for the removal of water under normal operating conditions. Similar packing can be used in the channel (17) between the two chambers. There is a pipe network below the foundation (11) to ensure its cooling and to maximise heat transfer.
