A container (1) for the ashes of a deceased person has a cover (2) affixed to it by adhesive or by a snap lock system. The cover has on its upper side an indentation in which a plaque (3) can be pressed or glued. The plaque contains the inscription engraved into it and is made from a corrosion resistant metal alloy. The container has on its underside a cylindrical extension (12) which locates in a circular foot (5) and is glued to it. An outer cap (4) is used to cover the top of the container. The container cover and foot and outer cap are made from a degradable thermoplastic starch derivative and formed by injection moulding.
