A spring strip (11) is mounted on the rear face of the brake pad and protrudes into a recess (15) in the brake pad lining (3). The spring extends into the brake pad lining by an amount 'X' which is equivalent to the amount of minimum safe brake lining. When the lining is worn to this thickness, the brake disc will rub against the end of the spring while generating an audible warning. The spring is mounted within the space inside the hollow brake operating piston (8).
