The coding of information by means of the phases or frequencies of alternating currents required considerable expenditure. The transmission also required a considerable bandwidth. In the present invention, the coding, whilst requiring little expenditure, is carried out in such a manner that the change in the pulse durations of squarewave pulses at the same time also changes the phase or, respectively, frequency. Filtering means are then used for generating sinusoidal alternating currents. At the receiving end, the half periods or periods are then a measure of the phase or frequency change, the measuring of which does not represent any problem.
