Compsns. for control of pine wood nematodes (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) are (A) compsns. contg. a pine extract prepd. by extraction with an organic solvent; (B) repellent compsns. contg. alpha-humulene, opt. in admixture with beta-bisabolene; (C) repellent compsns. contg. a mixt. of alpha-pinene and calarene; (D) nematocidal compsns. contg. methyl ferulate and/or (+)- pinoresinol; (E) compsns. contg. hydroxycrystilbenes (I) or their salts. Also claimed is prepn. of cpds. (I) or their salts by: (a) preparing a methoxystilbene (II) from a benzyl phosphonate and a methoxybenzaldehyde by wittig-horner reaction; (b) dimethylating (II) and (c) opt. converting the prod. to a salt.
