The depth of fading and their frequency levels can be continuously varied by electronically adjustable components. The transmission signal is split into a direct and an indirect beam which are subject to different attenuation and cycle length effects before being joined together again. The indirect beam passes through a quarter wavelength resonator with variable terminal resistance and resonance length. It is joined with the direct beam by superimposing it with the echo signal from the resonator. The depth of the damping is determined by the terminal resistance and the frequency depends on the average frequency of the transmission band from the resonator length.
