Spool winding machine with broken thread mending facility

The spool winding machine responds to a detected breakage in the thread being wound onto the spool (16) for temporary interruption of the winding process, with the spool rotated in the opposite direction (56) and the thread end seized by a suction device supplying it to a mending device for joining with the opposite thread end. The spool has a thread end sensor (49), controlling the operation of the drive for rotating the spool in the reverse direction, when the broken thread end is wound onto the spool, for paying out the broken end.
