The machine has traversing devices (3) to change threads (1) to be spanned in a spool axis direction. A pressure roller (4) fits the changed threads at a spool (8). A sensor (17) e.g. triangulation sensor, directly or indirectly detects position or length of tubes (9). A positioning unit (20) adjusts position of the traversing devices in a spool spindle axis direction depending on a detected measuring value from the sensor. The traversing devices are formed of traversing wings that are rotated opposite to each other, where the traversing devices are attached to a common traversing plate (21). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a winding machine for winding a set of thin threads to a set of spools.
