A stud welding device comprises an adjusting element (3) displaceable from a front to a rear position and then back again with an axial force by the action of a magnetic field and a coil (15) which is connected to a controllable current source (41). The movement of the adjusting element is transmitted to a stud holder (2) exerting an axial force only in one direction as a function of the direction of current during current control. Coil (15) is rigidly arranged on a hollow body (14) which is connected to the adjusting element (3) movable axially in the air gap (13) between a magnetizable core (8) and sheath (10). The magnetic field is conveyed via at least one yoke (9) connecting the core and sheath while passing radially through the coil. A light weight stud welding device which is decisive in applying axial pressure whilst allowing high acceleration and deceleration. The design provides that at a given current strength a magnetic field and a coil interact in such a way that the axial force acting on the adjusting element and stud holder remains substantially equal independently of position. Smooth, high speed operation over a long stroke path is achieved owing to the relatively low mass of the welder.
