ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method and apparatus treat a surface ofnatural rock or artificial stone-like material to giveto the treated surface an attractive finish. A hightemperature jet of plasma and a high speed jet ofcooling fluid are projected onto the surface to betreated. The two jets are moved on the surface at agiven speed with the jet of cooling fluid followingthat of plasma. The speed of movement is so selectedthat the high temperature plasma jet suddenly heatsonly a thin layer of rock or stone-like material tocause a thermal shock which bursts particles of rock orstone-like material at the surface thereof. As the jetof cooling fluid follows the jet of plasma, it suddenlycools the thin layer just heated by the plasma jet, andblows the burst particles off the body surface.
