The invention relates to a heat insulating and refractory essentially formed of refractory ceramic fibers mechanically associated with each other, whose composition comprises at least 97,5% by weight of alumina, silica and of zirconia in total, characterized in that: & br / a) to any organic or inorganic binder does not bind the fibers together; & br / b) the fibres have the following chemical composition, in% by weight: & br / (see appended drawing in bopi) & br / & & br / other oxides: 2 o3 + tio2 = 0,20% and na2 o + cao + k2 o & = 0,30%; & br / c) the said fibres have a homogeneous manner throughout the mass of the element a degree of crystallinity of at least 30% and at most 64%, the crystals present being essentially formed of mullite crystals and of quadratic zirconia; and & br / d) the said element has a linear shrinkage of at most 3% after being kept for 24 hours at 1450 degréc.
