In the hydrogenation of nitriles to amines using a catalyst based on Raney nickel, the catalyst is doped with at least one additional metallic element from e.g; Gp=IVB, and is formed from a metallurgical precursor alloy Ni/Al dopant(s). The process comprises:- selection of a liq./reaction medium and solvent for the nitrile substrate to be hydrogenated; - addn. of a mineral base i.e. an alkali or alkaline earth hydroxide; - use of a catalyst for which the wt. ratio of dopant to nickel is 0.05-10%.
