Short range ultrasonic distance warning system

A warning system for motor vehicles having rear-end and front-end transmitter and receiver arrangements 3 to 12 which also detect the corner areas, having a controller 15 activating and deactivating these and having warning elements 22, 23, 25 for the combined optical and/or acoustic warning indication, is disclosed in which the entire system is active in the case of reverse gear being selected and low speed, it being deactivated automatically at higher speed. In the case of reverse gear not being selected, only the system part 2 for front space monitoring is active at low speed of travel, while the system is once again automatically kept inactivated at higher speed.
