A device for batch injection stripping voltammetric analysis of metal traces comprises a large outer cell 11 housing a reference electrode 17, and an inner microcell 12 containing a rotating working electrode 14 of the mercury coated graphite type. The microcell is connected to a container 15 housing an auxiliary electrode 16, and the electrodes are connected by channels 20, (21) containing porous plugs 22. Channels 18 is provided for introducing sample to the microcell and channel 19 for removing the sample after analysis. The working electrode may be a graphite disc preplated with mercury from a solution of mercury nitrate, potassium nitrate and zinc nitrate at 0.6V. The working electrode is preferably maintained under cathodic polarisation during sample replacement. The sensitivity of the device extends down to about 0.03 to 0.3 ppb for certain metals. IMAGE
