PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an objective anhydrous samarium diiodide in a solid state by allowing metal samarium to react with iodine under heating at a prescribed temp. in a vessel controlled to a vacuum or inert atmosphere in a quantitative reaction. ;SOLUTION: The heating temp. is controlled to ≥520°C to ≤1500°C. The producing method is executed in the reaction vessel 1, for example, shown by a figure. The vessel 1 is a glass-made air tight vessel and is provided with a feed valve 2 for a rare gas or the like for evacuating or controlling the vessel 1 to the inert gas atmosphere, a heater 3 for heating and a take-out port 4 for the product. Samarium diiodide and samarium triiodide are produced by arranging iodine 7 and metal samarium 6 and heating metal samarium to allow the vaporized iodine to react with metal samarium. Samarium diiodide has 520°C m.p. and then only samarium diiodide is fused by heating the vessel 1 to ≥520°C and is solidified in the take-out port 4 at the time of inclining as shown by the arrow 5.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
