PICTURE PROCESSOR CAPABLE OF DETECTING DIRECTION OF READ PICTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture processor capable of automatically discriminating the direction of a read picture. SOLUTION: A specific pattern to be used for judging the vertical and horizontal directions of a picture is stored in a specific pattern storing memory as preprocessing. Then the existence of the specific pattern on read picture data obtained by scanning an original by an image scanner is searched by a pattern matching procedure (P3, P4). When the specified pattern exists, the coordinate position (X, Y) of a center position of the detected sepecific pattern on an x-y coordinate system defining a scanning start point as an origin is found out (P5, P6), a picture area having prescribed width including the specific pattern in the x-axis and y-axis directions is determined, the pixel distribution states of four picture areas formed from the coordinate position of the specific pattern in the coordinate value reducing direction and increasing direction are found out (P7), and the vertical and horizontal directions of the read picture are judged from the distribution state result (P8).
