PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily perform estimation of earth quality of facing and selection of timbering by determining the values of parameters of a relational formula based on the measurement value of excavation data in a certain excavation region, and applying the measurement value of another excavation region to the relational formula. ;SOLUTION: A several sets of the cutting depth (p), excavation torque τor thrust (f) of cutter in a tunnel excavator are measured. Based on these measurement values parameters contained in the preliminalily set type of relational formulae (A1, A2) is determined. Among these parameters, K1-K4 are dependent on the strength of natural ground, the others do not depend thereon. Then, during the excavation operation in other excavation regions II, III,..., the cutting depth (p), excavation torque τ or thrust (f) are measured and the result is applied to the relational formulae (A1, A2). After fixing the parameters which do not dependent on the strength of natural ground, other parameters are specified by each excavation region, then the relative strength characteristic of each facing natural ground is obtained or a timbering pattern is obtained relatively.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
