PURPOSE: To make use of the advantage of a desulfurization method carried out using an activated carbon layer and remove sulfurous acid gas highly efficiently from a gas to be treated without requiring enlargement of an apparatus and without increasing the consumption of operation energy. ;CONSTITUTION: This activated carbon-based catalyst reaction apparatus 18 is an apparatus for removing sulfurous acid gas from a gas to be treated containing 100vol. ppm or less sulfurous acid gas, oxygen, and moisture and the apparatus is built in a waste gas desulfurization apparatus. The waste gas desulfurization apparatus is provided with a plurality of activated carbon-based catalytic layers 19 and a diluted sulfuric acid recovering means 21a; the catalytic layers are filled with activated carbon having 5μmol/g/hr or higher catalytic oxidation rate from sulfurous acid to sulfuric acid; the side walls in the longitudinal direction of the layers are arranged in a plurality of rows along the flowing direction of the gas to be treated in a direction nat right angles to the gas flowing direction; and layers 19 are so made as to pass the gas to be treated in the thickness direction at right angles to the side walls; and the diluted sulfuric acid recovering means 21a continuously discharges diluted sulfuric acid produced by catalytic oxidation reaction of sulfurous acid and oxygen in the activated carbon-based catalyst layers 19 while using the activated carbon as a catalyst.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
