FULLERENE-BINDING WATER-SOLUBLE POLYMER PHOTOSENSITIZER FOR PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photosensitizer for the photodynamic therapy by chemically modifying fullerene with a water-soluble polymer. ;SOLUTION: Fullerene is made soluble in water and given the cancer tissue- targeting properties after its intravenous administration. The difference in disappearance pattern of accumulated fullerenes from the tissues is cleverly utilized to increase the concentration difference between the normal tissues and the cancer tissues and the photodynamic therapy effect that only cancer tissues can be broken by radiation with light is recognized. Thus, the fullerene-water- soluble polymer binder can be expected to be used as a photosensitizer for the photodynamic therapy.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
