PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To store and hold the multiple rotations of a multi-rotary absolute value encoder even when the power supply to the encoder is completely interrupted and back up to the encoder is unable. ;SOLUTION: In a method for holding the multiple rotations of a multi-rotary absolute value encoder, the multiple rotations of the encoder is held by using a rewritable memory device 5 and an external power source and the absolute values of the multiple rotations of the encoder are detected by using a control circuit 3 which can deliver and receive signals to and from an external controller 6. The multiple rotations are stored in the memory device 5 before the lead of the external power source is exchanged while power supply is made to the encoder and, when the power supply to the encoder is again made after the lead is exchanged, the multiple rotations stored in the device 5 are sent out in accordance with a signal from the controller 6.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
