PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make possible such address assignment that can enhance the resolution of a micro-mechanical spatial optical modulator. SOLUTION: When a modulator element receives a first pulse (40) which releases the element from the preceding state, the element is set to such a state that the element can shift to a non-addressed state by removing a bias voltage and again applying the bias voltage and receives a second pulse 46. After receiving the second pulse 46, the element is set to the non-addressed state. While the element is set at the non-addressed state, the element is set to such a state that the element can cope with a new state by loading new address data and again applying the bias voltage. In addition, the element is turned off by clearing the preceding address while the element is in the non- addressed state.
