PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst having high catalytic activity and stability and producing branched chain aldehyde or alcohol with high selectivity. ;CONSTITUTION: This catalyst is a catalyst for oxosynthesis using olefin, carbon monoxide and hydrogen and contains a rhodium complex having a multidentate ligand contg. at least one N atom. The multidentate ligand is, e.g. a ligand contg. at least one N atom and at least one of P and O atoms such as an imidazole or hexamethyl phosphorus triamide. When this catalyst is used, branched chain aldehyde or alcohol can be obtd. with high selectivity. In the case of a water-soluble rhodium complex catalyst having a water-soluble multidentate ligand such as triethanolamine, the catalyst is very easily separated from a reactional product and the objective compd. is stably produced while maintaining the catalytic activity over a long period of time.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
