PURPOSE: To provide a surface coating slow away tip having high abrasion resistance and a long life, by making the hardness of a coating layer on a flank harder than that on a rake face. ;CONSTITUTION: In a case where a coating layer 2 is formed by many layers onto the surfaces of at least the flank and rake face of a surface coating slow away tip; the abrasion resistance of a coating layer can be increased by using the carbide, nitride, or carbonitride of a metallic element, composed of periodic tables 4a, 5a, 6a, and Al, as layers 4a-4i, and 5a-5i for forming plural periodic layers 3a-3i. Moreover, the flank and rake face of the tip are concurrently coated by the same coat material, and the hardness of the coating layer on the flank is made harder by desired quantity than that of the rake face.
