Alumina-coated SiC whiskers and SiC whisker-reinforced composite material Seramitsukusu

摘要

PURPOSE:To make SiC whiskers unreactive with a matrix and to enable easy dispersion in the matrix by coating the surfaces of the SiC whiskers with alumina. CONSTITUTION:The surfaces of SiC whiskers are coated with alumina by adding the whiskers to an aluminum oxide soln. or by other method and the coated whiskers are calcined to stabilize the alumina. The resulting alumina coated SiC whiskers are uniformly dispersed in a matrix and hardly react with the matrix. When the whiskers are added, a ceramic composite material having superior bending strength and fracture toughness can be provided.
