PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out the subject treatment industrially and advantageously by bringing separation waste water and/or cleaning waste water occurring in the production of a compound useful as a medicine into contact with iron powder to extremely reduce nitration inhibition of waste water in activated sludge treatment. SOLUTION: Separation waste water and/or cleaning waste water occurring in producing a compound of formula II by reacting a compound of formula I (R is a lower alkali; X is H or a halogen) (e.g. 2-acetylphenol, etc.) with a nitrating agent (e.g. nitric acid, etc.) is brought into contact with iron powder. For example, in the contact, iron powder having 10-100 meshes is used as the iron powder. The amount of the iron powder is about 0.1-5wt.% based on the compound of formula I. The reaction is preferably carried out at about 0-100 deg.C for about 1-12 hours.
