PURPOSE:To obtain the subject enhancer, capable of improving Z-axis paper strength, interlayer paper strength and freeness, containing a cationic polyacrylamide produced by reacting a specific acrylamide-based copolymer with a hypohalite within an alkaline region as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The objective paper strength enhancer containing a cationic polyacrylamide produced by reacting an acrylamide-based copolymer containing (A) 97-60mol%, preferably 95-70mol% carbamoyl groups and (B) 3-40mol%, preferably 5-30mol% N,N-dimethyl(meth)acrylamide groups with a hypohalite (e.g. sodium hypochlorite) within an alkaline region as an active component.
