PURPOSE:To operate a top and bottom-blown converter without over-loading its trunnion by setting a group of bottom-blowing tuyeres at the bottom of the converter under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:Many bottom-blowing tuyeres 3 are arranged at the converter bottom so that S1/S2 =0.244-0.236H/D (at H/D0.35), S1/S2 =0.431-0.712H/D (at H/D0.35), and L2/L11.0 are established. In the inequalities, S1 denotes the maximum area (m2) enclosed with the bottom-blowing tuyere group 3, S2 the cross-sectional area of the converter, H the depth of the steel bath, L1 the maximum length of the tuyere group 3 in the direction parallel to the trunnion 4, L2 the maximum length of the tuyere group 3 in the direction normal to the trunnion 4, and D the diameter of the converter. By this method, the low-strength trunnion 4 is not overloaded in the parallel direction, and a bottom- blown or top-blown converter can be smoothly operated.
