PURPOSE: To obtain a new carbazole derivative, excellent in heat resistance and moldability, further having solubility and usable as a polymeric material for various applications. ;CONSTITUTION: This carbazole derivative is expressed by formula I (X is benzyl or benzyloxyethyl), e.g. N-benzyl-3,6-dibromocarbazole. The compound expressed by formula I in which X is benzyl is obtained by brominating carbazole as a raw material with bromine N-bromosuccinimlde. etc., as a brominating agent, providing 3,6-dibromocarbazole and then reacting the resultant compound with benzyl chloride. The compound expressed by formula I in which X is benzyloxyethyl is prepared by reacting the 3,6-dibromocarbazole with 2- benzyloxyethyl p-toluenesulfonate. The compound expressed by formula I is reacted with an aromatic diamine expressed by formula II and carbon monoxide in the presence of a palladium catalyst and an organic base to afford a carbazole-based polyamide expressed by formula III [R1 is an alkylene or a hetero-element; R2 to R5 each is H or an alkyl; (n) is 5-100] or formula IV.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
