PURPOSE: To obtain at low cost the subject safe and highly versatile reagent with many kinds of usable solvents, useful for producing 1H-tetrazoles from carbonitriles, composed of an alkali metal azide and zinc chloride. ;CONSTITUTION: This new reagent is composed of (A) an alkali metal azide (pref. sodium azide) and (B) zinc chloride. Using this reagent, a 1H-tetrazole compound of the formula is produced from a carbonitrile compound of the formula R-CN (R is a substituent). In this case, the reaction is carried out normally under normal pressures at 50-150°C for 30min to 24h. When benzonitrile is used as the carbonitrile compound, 5-phenyl-1H-tetrazole is obtained as the compound of the formula.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
