PURPOSE:To prevent a button from being sewn to cloth as it is without checking the front and back side of the button by providing a means to discriminate the front and back side of the button according to the vertical displacement of a button detecting means. CONSTITUTION:For a button detector, when a button load solenoid is turned ON, a button 7 is supplied to a button supply arm 6, turned and inserted into a button handle foot 5 in the state of inserting a pin 8 into the hole of the button 7. After the button is crimped, it rises up and when the other end lower surface of a presence/ absence detection lever 9 for the button is pushed by the edge part of the upper surface of the button 7, the button is turned in a counter-clock-wise direction. Then, a button search switch 13 is shielded and the presence/absence of the button is detected. At such a time, the other end lower surface of a front/back detection lever 14 for the button is pushed up by the upper surface central part of the button 7 as well and when the button 7 is supplied at a correct front/back position, the front/back detection switch 17 is still turned on without being changed. When the button is not supplied in a correct direction, the front/back detection lever 14 is relatively moved in the counter-clock-wise direction with a pin 15 as a center and the front/back detection switch 17 is turned OFF.
