PURPOSE:To make it possible to measure unsaturated iron combining ability which is not affected by albumin by using an anion surfactant. CONSTITUTION:When unsaturated iron combining ability in serum is measured, anion surfactant is added. Thus the effect due to non-transferrin combin is avoided. At this time the following material is prepared: the material wherein the anion surfactant is added into either or both of a first reagent incorporating iron whose quantity is known and a second reagent incorporating chelate agent which performs chemical coloring. Then, the first reagent is made to react with the serum. Thereafter, the second reagent is added for reaction. In this method, the unsaturated transferrin in the serum is combin to the added iron and transformed into the saturated transferrin. The extra iron is determined by the chelate agent. The quantity is subtracted from the quantity of the added iron whose excessive quantity is known. Thus, the unsaturated iron combining ability can be obtained.
