PURPOSE:To remove the residual alkali metal compound from a crude polymeric substance within a short time to a very small level by using a relatively small apparatus, by extracting the alkali metal compound from the crude polymeric substance with an aqueous phase in a specified agitation tank and cetrifuging the mixture. CONSTITUTION:The subject operation is performed in the following way. A crude polymeric substance which is an oxyalkylene polymer containing an alkali metal compound (e.g., NaCl) and having a viscosity-average MW of, for example, 500-1,000,000 and water together with optionally a solvent which can dissolve the crude polymeric substance but does not substantially ln water are fed to a liquid inlet 1 of a high-speed agitation tank which is preferably partitioned with compartments 4 to form multiple stages in each of which an impeller 3 which is, for example, an edged turbine of an impeller tip speed of at least 10m/sec, and the mixture is agitated to extract the alkali compound with the aqueous phase, and the mixture is fed from a liquid outlet 2 to a centrifuge and separated into the polymeric substance phase as an organic phase and the water phase.
