In the production of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface proteins in particulate form with substantially reduced entrapped carbohydrate content, the DNA encoding HBV surface proteins is expressed in a recombinant yeast host that is deficient in its ability to glycosylate proteins. These HBV surface proteins contain antigenic sites genetically encoded by the open reading frame of the HBV virion envelope and contain a substantially reduced amount of entrapped carbohydrate compared to HBsAg particles produced in "wild type" yeast cells. The particles obtained are useful as a vaccine for both active and passive treatment or for the prevention of diseases and / or infections caused by HBV or other agents that are serologically related to HBV.
