A biologically active, secreted protein which is composed of several subunits is prepared by means of a recombinant methodology. Each subunit is synthesized by a cell which harbours an autonomously replicating expression vector, such as a plasmid or virus, which contains heterologous DNA which encodes the subunit. The preferred host is a eucaryotic cell. The secreted protein is a hormone, such as hCG, luteinising hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) or thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). IMAGE
