The present invention discloses a process for the preparation of catalysts, comprising a manufacturing method carried out by solubilization of a platinum or rhodium compound in an alcohol solution containing a titanium alkoxide. The solution is gelled by the effect of temperature. Dry gel containing platinum or rhodium metal is thermally treated in an oxygen flow at temperatures ranging from 450 degree C to 750 degree C. Catalysts prepared by this process comprise a structure having a controlled porosity and specific area. Platinum or rhodium transition metal is partially incorporated into the titanium net. The metal portion which is not incorporated into said net is dispersed in the titanium surface. The catalysts prepared by this method are highly reactive for oxidation of carbon monoxide and reduction of nitrogen oxides, and are capable of being deposited in a refractory material.
