The present invention discloses a process for a catalyst preparation for the obtention of a high octane gasoline by C5-C6 isomerization of linear paraffins, which is characterized in that it comprises the steps of: introducing an active element to a catalytic support by impregnation thereof under an inert atmosphere, with an aqueous solution comprising said active element selected from group VII B of the elements periodic table; stabilizing the catalytic support; impregnation under an inert atmosphere for a period of 10 to 24 hours; drying the catalytic support so impregnated at a temperature of 100 degree C to 150 degree C in a hot air flow for 2-6 hours; calcinating said support at a temperature of about 320 degree C to about 400 degree C in an oxidizing atmosphere for 1 to 5 hours and reducing said catalyst in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature of 200 degree C-380 degree C, for 6 to 16 hours. For catalyst activation, the catalyst is dried with hot N2, at a temperature of 180 degree C-260 degree C for about 2 to about 6 hours, the gas humidity being maintained bellow 25 ppm. Finally, an organic halogenide is fed as CC14 to a carrying gas at a temperature of 230 degree C for a period of 6-12 hours.
