The invention relates to a process and to the device for controlling and guaranteeing safe operation of heating appliances not connected to a chimney and especially oil- based heaters indoors, under both normal conditions and conditions falling outside the latter. Outside the normal conditions of normal heating there is the danger of incomplete combustion occurring, with the consequent reduced levels of O2 and increased levels of CO2 in the indoor air. The objective of the invention is to enable the level of CO2 in the indoor air to be controlled rapidly and precisely and to guarantee, independently of the intensity of the flame of the burner, that the oil- based heater can be adjusted and safe operation thereby guaranteed, independently of the detection of the intensity of the flame sensitive to radiation. In accordance with the present invention, the said objective is achieved by measuring the level of O2 in the combustion gases of the burner inside the oil-based heater sensitively and using this value as a measurement for controlling the level of CO2 in the indoor air and converting a tension (voltage) signal to be used as control signal, in which, during operation of the burner outside a preset range of intensity of flame, use is made of the said O2-sensitive detector both for reestablishing a normal heating condition and for regulating operation at a minimum flame intensity and the production of an alarm signal and automatic delayed snuffing-out of the burner which take place at a first and at a second predetermined level of O2 in the combustion gas of the burner, respectively, corresponding to predetermined levels of CO2 in the indoor air, the second level being lower than the said first level. In addition, means are installed for detecting, sensitively, the level of CO in the combustion gas of the burner inside the oil-based heater and also for using the said level as a measure for adjusting the level of CO2 in the indoor air, after conversion into a corresponding control signal.
